Australia extends 2,4-D ester suspensions:
The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has extended the suspension of short-chain ester forms of the phenoxy herbicide, 2,4-D, until April 30th 2009. Last year, the APVMA suspended the registrations of 24 products containing the ethyl, butyl or isobutyl esters of 2,4-D (Agrow No 506, p 16). The suspensions followed concerns over risks to non-target crops, native vegetation and aquatic organisms because of the high volatility of the herbicides (Agrow No 494, p 15). The APVMA has restricted the use of the suspended products while seeking new data to generate a refined environmental risk assessment.
