EU considers zero set-aside

The European Commission's Agriculture Directorate-General has proposed that the EU set-aside rate, currently 10%, should be cut to zero for crop sowings in autumn 2007 and spring 2008. The move has been prompted by low cereal stocks, adverse weather and high grain prices. It follows calls from EU Agriculture Ministers and the European farmers' groups, COPA and COGECA, for action to meet rising global demand for cereals and oilseeds.
