EU sets 1,3-dichloropropene phase-out dates:
The European Commission has formally set a phase-out timetable for the nematicide, 1,3-dichloropropene (1,3-D), following the decision not to re-register the active ingredient (Agrow No 521, p 7). EU member states must withdraw approvals by March 20th 2008, while existing stocks may be used until March 20th 2009. However, the Commission may extend the latter deadline for a further 18 months, in view of 1,3-D's role as an alternative to the ozone-depleting fumigant, methyl bromide. The Commission is to review the implication of the withdrawal of 1,3-D on the use of methyl bromide. Dow AgroSciences says that it will be "aggressively submitting additional data to address Commission concerns" about the ai (Agrow ibid). The company aims to gain re-registration before the ai is scheduled to be removed from the market.
