Brazil launches pro-organic campaign:

The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture has launched a campaign, Pro Organico, to promote organic produce. It includes a product fair this month, consumer information on health and environmental benefits of such produce, and reassuring the public on the source and production of organic food. The campaign seeks -to support and strengthen the organic product farming, processing and marketing sectors and stimulate [their] growth", the Ministry says. Brazil does not produce much pesticide-free food, while there is large demand for it in many countries, Minister of Ecological Agriculture Rogerio Dias says. The organic sector has two major obstacles: higher prices than conventionally produced food; and no recognised labelling to assure consumers of the source. Mr Dias says that legislation on the latter issue should come into force soon.
