Uganda tests second-generation GM cotton
Uganda is field testing Monsanto’s genetically modified insect-resistant Bollgard II cotton, the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA) reports. The public body, the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO), is planting the crop. The ISAAA also notes that the NARO had recently started field testing of glyphosate-tolerant Roundup Ready Flex cotton. The Organisation recently carried out trials on first-generation Bollgard cotton ( Agrow No 567, p 22). Bollgard II contains the Bt toxins, Cry1Ac and Cry2Ab2, and offers protection against cotton leaf worms ( Alabama argillacea), tobacco budworms (Heliothis virescens), pink bollworms ( Pectinophora gossypiella) and fall armyworms ( Spodoptera frugiperda).
