Rust-resistant soybeans across Africa

The supply of Asian soybean rust ( Phakopsora pachyrhizi)-resistant soybeans is to be rolled out across west and central Africa, the newswire, SciDev, reports. The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA - Ibadan) has already prepared the launch of the rust-resistant variety, TGx 1835-10E, in Nigeria ( Agrow No 572, p 19). It will become widely available across the region in 2010, the newswire notes. IITA soybean breeder Hailu Tefera sees great potential. "It was previously released in Uganda by Makerere University and has already shown excellent performance in trials carried out in southern Africa,” he says.
