German-UK collaboration on GMO detection project
The German federal office for consumer protection and food safety, the BVL, in collaboration with the UK Food Standards Agency, has launched a two-year research and development project entitled GMOseek. The aim of the project is to develop better tools for the detection of genetically modified organisms in food, feed and seed. The project emphasises the need for more effective screening procedures in view of the rise in the number of applications for the introduction of GM crops in the EU and elsewhere. It will involve five research or diagnostic laboratories from Belgium, Germany, Slovenia and the European Commission's Joint Research Centre.
