EU sets phase-out schedule for chlorthal-dimethyl
The European Commission has instructed EU member states to withdraw approvals for the herbicide, chlorthal-dimethyl, by March 23rd 2010. They may allow existing stocks to be sold and used until March 23rd 2011. The move follows the decision by the EU regulatory committee not to re-register the active ingredient ( Agrow No 572, p 9). Chlorthal-dimethyl's evaluation was conducted as part of the EU review of existing ais. The evaluation raised concerns regarding the leaching of the metabolite, MPA, to ground water.
