China promotes PIC co-operation

China held an international seminar on implementing the Rotterdam Convention on prior informed consent (PIC) in Nanjing this month, reports the Ministry of Agriculture's institutefor the control of agrochemicals. The seminar was attended by representatives of customs departments, private enterprises and government Ministries from the major importers of Chinese pesticides such as the EU, Brazil, South Africa, Pakistan, Vietnam and Thailand. Methods for combating illegal pesticide trade were discussed, and co-operation mechanisms for regulating pesticide imports and exports were improved, the institute adds. The 1998 Rotterdam Convention requires participating countries to give prior notification of imports of pesticides on the PIC list ( Agrow No 301, p 18).
