EU mulls Madeira GMO-free bid

The European Commission has decided to allow more time for considering a bid by the Portuguese autonomous region, Madeira, to declare itself free of genetically modified organisms. Portugal notified the Commission in May of Madeira’s draft decree on GMOs. The EU normally has six months to accept or reject proposed national measures, but this has been extended to May 4th 2010 due to the “complexity” of the case, says EU Environmental Commissioner Stavros Dimas.
