New Zealand to keep methyl bromide for QPS - update
The New Zealand Environmental Risk Management Authority (ERMA) recommends the continued registration of quarantine and pre-shipment (QPS) uses of the fumigant, methyl bromide, in the medium term. It is carrying out a review of the fumigant, following a rise in imports for timber treatment in recent years ( Agrow No 549, p 18). The ERMA calls for the immediate revocation of import approvals for non-QPS uses, with stocks to be used up by the end of 2010. It also wants additional controls on timber treatments, including exposure limits and buffer zones. The preliminary recommendations are open to public comment until February 26th 2010. A final decision is due to be made in mid-to-late 2010.
