EU sets phase-out dates for bifenthrin and triazoxide
The European Commission has instructed EU member states to withdraw approvals for the insecticide/acaricide, bifenthrin, and the fungicide, triazoxide, by May 30th 2010. Existing stocks may be sold and used by May 30th 2011. The Commission to initiated the phase-out schedule after EU Ministers failed to agree on whether to accept or reject its proposals not to re-register the active ingredients ( Agrow No 572, p 9). The EU evaluation of bifenthrin raised concerns on several aspects, including ground water contamination and risks to aquatic vertebrates, mammals, earthworms and non-target arthropods, the Commission says. The triazoxide evaluation concluded that missing residue data prevented a reliable consumer risk assessment, and that the available data did not demonstrate an acceptable long-term risk to mammals, birds, fish and earthworms.
