FRESH fruit was Chile’s fourth biggest export by value to Brazil after copper, salmon and trout in 2010, Valor Económico reported. Exports reached USD17 million, 65.2% up on 2009, with apples, table grapes and plums contributing most. Fresh fruit exported to Brazil in the 2010/11 season totalled 81 337 tonnes (over 58% more than in the previous season) according to the Fruit Exporters Association of Chile. Numbers also include dry fruits like almonds and nuts. This rise meant Brazil overtook Ecuador and Peru to become the second biggest Latin American market for Chilean fruit, after Colombia. Chile wants to up its fruit exports to Asia, which represented 10% of exports. The US (taking 38%) and Europe (29%) were the biggest destinations.
