Senate Approves FY 2013 Continuing Resolution

The Senate today cleared, 73-26, its version of the $984 billion Fiscal Year 2013 continuing resolution, thereby avoiding a shutdown of the US govenrment on March 28, the date when current stopgap funnding expires, with funding now in place through the end of September. The spending bill includes the same funding levels as legislation already approved by the House, and would keep the $85 billion in automatic spending cuts known as sequestration -- but an approved amendment would adjust some of those cuts to thwart any furloughs of meat inspectors.

Just before the Senate voted on the full bill, Senate Appropriations Chairwoman Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) praised senators for working in a bipartisan fashion to improve on a bill that had been passed by the House earlier this month. “We didn’t want brinkmanship politics. We didn’t want ultimatum politics,” she said.
